Contrary to popular belief...
Everyone is NOT your prospect.
I know the popular wisdom is that you should prospect EVERYONE because EVERYONE is your prospect...
But this simply isn't true, and it's just bad business advice.
If you try to appeal to everyone, you appeal to no one.
If you try to appeal to everyone, you appeal to no one.
Sure, maybe your product is so amazing that EVERYONE could benefit from it, but if they aren't at least interested in what you have to offer, they aren't going to buy, and you're just wasting your time.
Therefore, you definitely want to know who your target audience is, and what your ideal customer looks like.
You want to find out what other things they would be interested in, so you can incorporate it into your brand and attract them to you.
It's helpful to create an actual ideal customer avatar, who is one person (real or fictitious) who represents your target audience as a whole.
If you want some help creating your avatar, just grab my worksheet below which has some questions you can answer to help you understand your avatar.

Of course you want more than one customer, but having an avatar can give you several practical benefits.
- 1Puts a "face" to your audience, so you can see them as individual people with real hopes, dreams, and pains, rather than a nebulous "audience".
- 2Helps you focus your marketing efforts, and takes the guess-work out of what you should post and how you should word your copy...just think, "what would appeal to my avatar?"
- 3Makes it easier to talk to ONE person in your content (videos, blog posts, emails, etc.). It's easy for marketers to say "you guys" in their content, but it's more effective to speak like you're talking to one person.
I could go on, but you get the picture. Having an avatar helps.
But how exactly do you find out who your ideal customer avatar is?
You've probably heard that your avatar is probably someone a lot like you...
But that isn't always the most practical advice.
So I shot the video below to give you some tips on how you can actually research your target audience, so you can know precisely who your ideal customer avatar is.
