Ever wish direct sales success could be boiled down into just a couple simple points?
I recently was asked a question from someone wanting to know what the top three things were that made me successful.
And I thought the best way to answer that was to just shoot a video about it.
So I was trying to figure out the top three things but came up with four...
And I couldn’t whittle them down so here are the top four things that have been the keys to my success.
1. Have A Bigger Purpose
The first one is that I have a purpose higher than myself. That is huge when you’re starting out.
That’s not going to take you very far when times get tough...
And it's not really going to motivate you for the long haul.
You really need something of higher importance than yourself. Whether it’s your family, other people, or a cause, you must have a purpose greater than yourself.
You really need something of higher importance than yourself. Whether it’s your family, other people, or a cause, you must have a purpose greater than yourself.
When I first got started, some friends of mine were adopting.
The only problem was...
The expenses of adopting are astronomical, and I really wanted to find a way to help them with that financially.
Then I realized...
The direct sales business I was considering joining could definitely be the solution to funding their adoption, a cause that I truly believe in.
So that was what got me started, not to make money for myself, but to raise money for this family.
Then as the business grew, it became more about realizing and seeing the vision of what a business could be for a family.
For us, I had this vision of what our family could look like if we had a successful home business.
Having a vision for yourself and your business is key.
A Vision Will Carry You
If you have a vision in front of you of what life could be like, that will really carry you far.
Then as my team grew, I was able to see how this business was able to not only help my family, but also radically impact many more families.
Now it was no longer just about me, or making money, but so much more important and impactful!
It was so gratifying to be able to see how my work was really benefiting others.
It was really inspiring to see this business helping ladies who were ill, single parents, and whose husbands had passed away.
There are so many different stories and so many different ladies that were able to be helped by this and that was really motivating, really having that purpose and cause greater than yourself is what will really give you gratification and peace and joy in what you do.
This will carry you through the tough times, and 80% of the battle for success in network marketing is just not quitting.
80% of the battle for success in network marketing is just not quitting.
If you can keep going, you can achieve your goals.
Have a purpose greater than yourself.
2. Have The Right Attitude; Take responsibility
When you have a team this large (6,845), you learn a thing or two.
I’ve seen many ladies enroll and I can tell within the first five minutes of talking with them whether they’re going to be successful or not...
And it’s all because of their attitude.
The ladies who come in and are so excited and willing to do what it takes and ready to jump in are the ones that do well.
And the ones who are like "Well, I’ll try it out and see if it works or if anything will happen" are the ones that don’t tend to do as well.
Those new business owners who are super enthusiastic, positive, and resourceful, often go on to be very successful.
Those new business owners who are super enthusiastic, positive, and resourceful, often go on to be very successful.
Those who often go on to be not as successful usually have a negative and timid attitude when signing up.
They start off with a mindset that approaches the opportunity as a roll of the dice hoping to get lucky.
They prepare themselves for failure with excuses in reserve should they not experience instant success.
Negative Thoughts Become Self-Fulfilling Prophesies
This kind of attitude often ends up being a self-fulfilling prophesy.
If you’re in the habit of making excuses in general, then when tough times come into your business, it’s just going to be a habit to blame other
people and circumstances for he results.
However, the wonderfully liberating truth is...
Other people and circumstances don't determine success.
A huge key for success is taking responsibility for your life and taking responsibility for yourself.
It is so easy to blame other people or circumstances for where you are at the present time.
As long as you continue to blame outside things your circumstances are not going to change, you’re not going to hit your goals.
Once you take responsibility for yourself and your actions, then you'll actually have the power to change it.
So when things get rough, don’t make excuses...tough times come in everybody’s lives.
I’ve had a ton of tough things come up through the past seven years of working in business and you just can’t just use them as excuses for why you’re not going to succeed.
Difficulties Arise, Not Reasons For Failure
And yes, there are times when you need to back off and focus on other things with your priorities, and that’s fine but that’s not what I’m talking about.
I’m talking about the habit of making excuses anytime anything goes wrong. It can be other people, other circumstances, and it also can be blaming the company you’re with.
I see people jump from direct sales company to direct sales company all the time because they think the reason they’re not succeeding is that there’s something wrong with that company or that product.
You won’t be successful in any other business if you’re not successful in the one you're in now.
So don’t keep hopping from company to company. Stick to where you are if you love the product, and make it work!
Take responsibility for how things turn out and make it work!
3. Truly Care About Other People
I didn’t want to be in a business where it was all about making money or what I could get out of it for myself.
It’s caring about your customers and wanting what’s truly best for them.
I actually just enjoyed getting to know my customers.
Then when the team started to grow, even with the first consultant who signed up, I was thrilled to get to know her. I was also excited to get to know the bloggers that I was working with and my team members.
Sometimes, truly caring about other people means taking actions that don't necessarily help your business in the short term.
Sometimes you have to do things for the good of other people with no benefit to yourself, and here's a beautiful thing...
It comes around.
It WILL benefit you in the long run in some way.
Just be a good person and care about people.
Some trainers will say, do this step and that step to show you care about people, but that isn’t quite genuine, is it?
You can’t really do a formulaic step-by-step system to show people you care about them when you really don’t.
So enjoy people, enjoy working with people and that is really truly fulfilling.
4. Work Within Your Strengths
Number four, my extra one, is to work within your strengths.
And this is my controversial tip that not everyone agrees with.
Everybody has strengths and things they love to do.
You want your job, your business, to be something you can’t wait to jump out of bed and do first thing the morning because you're just THAT excited about it.
You don’t want to be lounging around thinking...
"Oh, I don’t want to deal with that, I don’t want to do this, I’m going to have to make myself do this...”
You want to work within your strengths.
Once you’re working in that zone and you’re really using your strengths, your creativity, and your personality that will generate momentum to really go far and fast and I also recommend going deep.
Whatever area you are interested in, go deep. Don’t dilute yourself by going wide and dabbling in different areas or different methods of selling.
Become An Expert In An Area You Enjoy
Go deep, become an expert in the area you enjoy and find exhilarating!
This does not mean that you never have to stretch yourself or never have to go out of your comfort zone. You absolutely do! And I had to do that many times, and the more I’m in it, the more I have to do that.
But when you're starting out, do what you love! Sell the way you love!
And that depends on if you’re an extrovert, or if you're an introvert.
Everybody’s different, and once you find what really makes you tick, and what you really enjoy and what you can’t wait to do and can’t wait to try, then you know that you’re on the way to really building something great.
On the other hand, if what you're doing is always a struggle...
If you're forcing yourself to do things because of what some trainer told you to do...
Run the other way!
Don't Force Yourself To Do Things You Hate To Build Your Business
You’re not going to get very far doing what you hate. How long can you stick with that?
You’re not going to get very far doing what you hate. How long can you stick with that?
Unless you have a HUGE motivation.
If your kids aren’t eating or your mortgage isn’t being paid, then probably that’s enough motivation, and you probably will do what it takes to get there.
Either you need some kind of huge motivation or you have to be doing something you love to truly get it work and be successful for the long haul.
So that’s my four top tips!
- 1Have purpose higher than yourself
- 2Your attitude and taking responsibility for yourself
- 3Truly caring about others
- 4Working within your strengths.
If you stick to these 4 things long enough, you'll start seeing results too.
