Feeling overwhelmed by the constant bombardment of new, shiny, strategies you get on an almost daily basis?
I don’t know about you, but I know I sometimes feel like I’m drowning in all the tasks I’m told I need to do to grow my business.
Have you thought to yourself,
“There has to be an easier, simpler way to grow my business?”
Well, there is!
In this post, I want to trim away all the unnecessary activities until we arrive at only the few essential tasks you need to do in order to grow your direct sales business.
And by the end, I’ll package them up in a simple “daily method of operation” that you can take with you and apply to your business.
But let’s cut to the chase…
What are the daily tasks you should be doing to grow your direct sales business?
To grow your direct sales business, you need to be filling up your “pipeline”.
Your pipeline is made up of two kinds of people:
1. People who are interested in your products or opportunity
2. Customers or team members
Therefore, what you want to be doing daily is growing your list of people who are either interested in your products or opportunity, or growing your list of customers and team members.
In fact, you should even create a DMO (daily method of operation) to ensure that you achieve these tasks.
What is a Daily Method of Operation?
A good daily routine is something that, if followed, WILL create success for you in your network marketing business.
For example, if your goal was to write a 50,000 word book in 100 days, then a good DMO would be to write 500 words a day.
If you were to follow that DMO, then you can’t NOT succeed! It’s impossible not to succeed. If you follow that DMO to the letter, you will have achieved your goal of writing a 50,000 word book.
Once you create a DMO for your direct sales business, then you never have to worry about if you will be successful or not.
Once you create a DMO for your direct sales business, then you never have to worry about if you will be successful or not.
AND! You can ignore all the other shiny tactics and training that come your way because…
You already have a process that you know, if followed, will guarantee that you hit your goal.
It may take a lot of work, and it may take more time than you anticipated…
But you will hit your goals and be successful.
Avoid Small Bursts!
Many times I see networkers that get excited, typically from attending an event, and they attack their business with all their might…
For a week or maybe even two weeks.
Then they wear themselves out or just get distracted and stop doing what was working and hope that their team now duplicates.
This tactic will NEVER work since you’re not building any momentum or consistency.
So you want a DMO that you can consistently maintain and won’t burn you out.

Daily Method of Operation Examples:
I looked up the DMOs of several different network marketing leaders, and here is what I found...
1. Mindset
Work on improving and developing your mindset every day by reading a book, listening to a book or podcast, etc...
2. Content Creation
Ray also recommends creating a piece of content every day, like a video where you teach something. This allows you to implement "Attraction Marketing", where you attract your ideal customer or team member by creating content that solves their problems.
3. Prospecting
This is Ray's (and many other leaders') bread-and-butter for growing a network marketing business. You have to connect with people every day. At a bare minimum, Ray recommends connecting to at least 3-5 people a day.
Or, if you want to do what Ray himself actually did, he went for 20 "No's" a day. This means he got 20 people to say "No" to looking at a presentation for either his products or opportunity
4. Attend & Promote Events
Not really something you can do daily, but Ray recommends attending events for their ability to provide powerful support and motivation to keep going.
Here is Ray's video where he goes into more detail about each of these 4 steps...
Tanya's DMO is a little different in that she recommends "time blocking", which is where you block out time in your day to work on certain tasks.
She has two 1-hour time blocks set aside every day (one in the morning one in the evening) for a total of 2-hours of work on her business a day.
1. Money-Making Activities
During the first block, Tanya recommends working on "money-making activities" which counts as...
- Adding 3-5 new people to her list
- Starting 3-5 new conversations and telling people happy birthday (on Facebook)
- Following-up with past conversations
- 3-way chats
2. Content Creation
Like Ray, Tanya also recommends content creation. She recommends creating "curiosity posts" on Facebook, and/or, shooting videos for social media content
3. More Money-Making Activities
And then in the evening time block, Tanya recommends doing more of what you did in the morning! However, you might also invite 3-5 people to view your product or business info, or do a FB live or team call
Here is Tanya's video where he goes into more detail about each of these 3 steps...
Simon calls his DMO the 3-5-5-5-3 method, and you'll see why...
1. 3 - Create 3 pieces of content every day
Simon recommends creating 3 pieces of content a day that either inspires, educates, or entertains. Like Ray, he recommends teaching something (attraction marketing).
2. 5 - Meet 5 new contacts a day
Again, continually adding people into your pipeline whom you can later reach out to about taking a look at your products or opportunity.
3. 5 - Inivite 5 people to look at a presentation
If you want to make sales or recruit, you need people to look at a presentation.
4. 5 - Follow-up with 5 prospects that you sent invites to
After prospects have seen a presentation, you need to follow up with them.
5. 3 - Have 3 prospects watch a video, attend a presentation, or a 3-way call
Here you're upping the selling a little bit, trying to "close".
What's Great About These DMOs...
If you've noticed, all 3 of these DMOs have 2 things in common...
1. Focus on income-producing activities
2. Create content (marking/branding)
I completely agree with this approach! Far too many direct sellers get lost in the weeds posting endlessly on social media, or taking training after training without really focusing on activity.
Why You Shouldn't Copy These DMOs...
However, there is a major issue with these DMOs...
They all emphasize social media prospecting.
This used to work in the past, and maybe it can still work today, but it's becoming increasingly less effective.
Social media platforms are really cracking down on network marketing companies, and especially prospecting. This can get you marked as spam or even thrown in Facebook jail.
On top of this, most people hate being prospected.
This is a difficult strategy to maintain when you constantly feel like you're bugging people, or only befriending people because you have the ulterior motive of wanting to sell to them.
Maybe if you're a really outgoing person, this isn't a problem. But what if you're an introvert?
What's the solution?
How to create a direct sales DMO (Especially if you are an introvert)
You still want to focus on income-producing activities, but what if I told you that you could have OTHER people promote your products for you?
And not just any old people, but people with MASSIVE influence over a large group of people who are the most likely to want to buy your product or join your team?
Well you, can, and it's called "influencer marketing".
With influencer marketing in mind, let's revisit the DMO:
1. Mindset/Personal Development
I agree with Ray that you should be working on your mindset every day. 90% of building a successful business is having the proper MINDSET! So many people fail not because they were incapable, but simply because their own thoughts got in the way.
So be constantly training your brain to have the right attitude and entrepreneurial mindset.
2. Income-Producing Activities
Yes, focus on income-producing activities, but my approach is different! Instead of contacting 3-5 random people on social media day, contact people with influence! It can look something like this...
- Find 3-5 potential influencers to collaborate with a day
- Send 3-5 inquiry emails to influencers a day
- Follow-Up with your email list
And when you contact influencers, you can either propose...
A Review & Giveaway Collaboration, Or
A 5-Day Email Treasure Hunt Collaboration
By doing this, you'll get A LOT more results for your time, and since you're being transparent and working with influencers, you're not going to be bugging people being salesy.
Follow-Up:
An often neglected but VITAL step is then following up with the dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of leads you're going to be generating from these influencer collaborations.
Marketing gurus say that every email subscriber on your email list is worth $1 a month.
So if you have 100 email subscribers, you should be generating about $100 a month from them.
If you're not making this much, then it may be that you need to do a better job with follow-up, and sending them VALUABLE content, not just a sales pitch.
If you want an example of an email template that sells, then check this out.
3. Content Creation
Now, you can absolutely build a thriving business JUST doing the two steps listed above. This is an optional step, but if you want to start generating sales and team members on autopilot, then definitely consider creating content and building your own brand.
