When you’re first starting your business, it can feel intimidating to think about branding yourself.
What does branding even mean?
Branding? That's going to cost a lot of money and involve getting all kinds of trademarks and copyrights and other legal stuff, right?
And for some reason the word "brand" always makes me think of breakfast cereal...
Where do you even get started?
Well, I’m here to tell you that…
Branding is not something to be afraid of!
The good news is that building your own powerful brand is actually much easer than it sounds.
In fact, it will happen naturally if you follow my top 10 tips to building a killer brand that resonates with your audience.
So let’s dive in…
1. Brand Your Name
YOU are the most important thing about your business.
So build a brand around you!
Use your name.
You are what makes your business unique and you are what your customers are investing in.
So make YOU the focus of your brand.
2. Know Everything About Your Audience
If you don’t know your audience, you’re going to have a really hard time.
So you need to know everything about your audience…
- Are they men or women?
- How old are they?
- What do they do?
- What are their pains, frustrations, needs, wants, and desires?
…otherwise, you can’t create content that will be relevant to them.
You also will end up wasting a ton of money if you don’t know who to target, which no one wants to do.
So make sure you study your market carefully and never stop asking questions.
You can learn more about researching your audience by watching my video below. It will teach you how to take what you know about your audience and create a "Customer Avatar".
A customer avatar is a profile or description of one person (real or fictional) who represents your audience as a whole. Understanding your avatar will help you better relate to your audience on a personal level.
3. Make Your Tagline Super Specific
You need to let your audience know what you’re going to DO for them right away.
Look at my tagline, for instance:
Grow Your Direct Sales Business Without Leaving Home
What are we going to do for you?
Help you grow your direct sales business!
How are you going to do that?
Without leaving home!
Don’t be vague, tell them exactly what they’re going to get from you and how you’re going to make their lives better.
4. Professional Design
Great design = credibility.
Or at least that's what people think.
If you look professional, people are going to think you are professional, and therefore, know what you're talking about.
You definitely want to have great, professional design if you want to powerfully build a brand.
A huge part of great design is having professional images and pictures.
Just like with making your name your brand, you need to have high quality pictures of yourself.
Whether you have a friend take some shots or you get them professionally done…
Quality photos catch people’s eye, make you stand out, and show your credibility.
Don’t put this off, it’s more important than you might realize!
5. Become An Expert
You know your target audience, so you also know what your prospects are looking for.
Now become an expert in exactly that.
Pick the one or two things that your audience comes to you for, and know that niche backward and forwards.
It could be health and wellness, physical fitness, fiscal responsibility, homeschooling, travel, or whatever it is you're passionate about.
Don’t try to be an expert in everything, that’s just exhausting and very difficult.
Also, to be an "expert" you don't have to know EVERYTHING about your topic. You just have to be a step or two further down the road than the people you're teaching.
Imagine you're talking to yourself a couple years ago. What do you know now that your past self wish they knew?
6. Love Your Story
You need to be able to recite your story in your sleep.
Your story is how your audience is going to relate to you.
Make your story part of your brand.
If you don’t have your story perfected yet, sit down, write it out, and perfect it.
This is your “elevator pitch,” so make sure it’s high impact, to-the-point, and benefit-driven.
In fact, the blog post I created on my story has proven to be one of my most effective posts at building my audience.
You can read it below.
I couldn’t believe it, after 2 failed attempts at starting my own business which left me totally devastated...My husband actually told me to stop trying to make money And to leave bringing home the bacon to him.Wow!
7. Be Your Authentic Self
This is so important!
I said it before, but it bears repeating…
Your clients are investing in you!
You can’t expect anyone to give you their hard-earned money if you are not being your 100% authentic self.
Your vibe attracts your tribe!
People will like you and be attracted to you…for being YOU.
In other words, don't try and copy what you see the "experts" doing. Stay true to YOUR strengths!
8. Be Consistent
Just like you need to be consistent in your business…
You need to be consistent with your branding.
Everything you put out into the world should be consistent with your brand, your message, and your image.
So be mindful to keep your aesthetic congruent across all your media channels.
9. Take Action!
This is big…
You need to actually take action!
The more people see you, the more they see your brand.
Find a strategy that works for you and work it!
Don't let indecision or a lack of certainty hold you back. All you need is clarity of direction (in other words a clear step-by-step strategy to follow) to take massive action!
If you don't have a clear step-by-step strategy for growing your business (without leaving home, bugging friends and family, or cold calling)...

10. Leverage Influencer Marketing
I built my business using Influencer Marketing, so I know what an amazing and powerful tool it is.
What is influencer marketing?
Influencer marketing is a form of marketing where you have leaders promote your brand or products to their loyal followers for you.
Influencer marketing allows you rapidly grow not only your brand, but your leads, sales, and even team.
When your ideal customers start seeing you and your products recommended by leaders and influencers they trust, your brand authority will shoot through the roof...
And so will your leads and sales.
Now for a bonus tip...
Know Where You Want To Go
You need to have a vision for your brand.
- What's your message? What are you for? Against?
- What's your end goal?
- Where do you want to be in five years?
If you don’t have a vision for your future, you’ll end up someplace else.
…and that someplace is probably not where you wanted to be.
So once you have a concrete vision…
Work every day to get your brand exactly where you want it to be.
